Communication Officer


Description of Duties:

Under the direct supervision of Head of UN Coordination the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

1.  Supports  advocacy  and  outreach  for  UN  system-wide  development  work,  focusing  on achievement of the following results:
·       Provides support to the UN Communication’s Group towards the planning and design of
a UN system-wide internal and external communication strategy.
·       Promotion  and  maintenance  of  public  information  campaigns  on  UNCT  activities  as coordinated by the UN Communications Group.
·       Promotion and dissemination of UN System advocacy materials.
·       Maintenance of increased coverage and understanding of UNCTs work through regular media contacts and provision of newsworthy information to the general public and, where possible, donors in collaboration with the UNCG.
·       Support forging a joint UN image through publicizing inter-agency advocacy efforts and support to implementation of joint UN campaigns such as UN recognized International Days.
·       Effective responses to inquiries for public information materials.

2. Coordinate the development of published materials on UN system-wide development work, in collaboration with agency focal points, focusing on achievement of the following results:
·       Develop and implement UN System branding guidelines and assure those are streamlined throughout UN System communication products.
·       Identify success stories and drafting of substantive articles contributing to debates on key
issues.
·       Support with the drafting of speeches and talking points for the RC on inter-agency initiatives.
·       Coordinate  UNCT  publication  activities,  such  as  content  management,  norms  for publishing, design, etc.,
·       Contact  printers  and  other  suppliers  to  ensure  production  and  ensure  publications
dissemination.
·       Review translations from English to Arabic to ensure the highest quality assurance.


3. Support the design and maintenance of the UN website, intranet, and social media, as well as UN  System  web-based  knowledge  management,  focusing  on  achievement  of  the  following results:
·       Coordinate the design and maintenance of the UNCT website and intranet based on
UNCT requirements.
·       Prepare the content for the UN System website and intranet to ensure consistency of messaging and materials.

4. Facilitates knowledge building and management, focusing on achievement of the following results:
·       Identification and synthesis of inter-agency communication best practices and lessons learned directly linked to UNCT goals and activities.
·       Sound  contributions  to  knowledge  networks  and  communities  of  practice,  including corporate communications repositories.

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are encouraged to:

·      Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark IVD);
·      Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country;
·      Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities;
·      Contribute    articles/write-ups    on    field    experiences    and    submit    them    for    UNV
publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.;
·      Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers;
·      Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

Results/Expected Output:
·      Advocacy and outreach for UN system-wide development work supported
·      Well-coordinated development of published materials on UN work, in collaboration with agency focal points.
·      Updated and well maintained UN website, intranet, and social media, as well as UN System web-based knowledge management.
·      Knowledge building and management facilitated
·      A  final  statement  of  achievements  towards  volunteerism  for  development  during  the assignment, such as reporting on the activities participated in and capacities developed.

Qualifications/Requirements:
·      Relevant University degree, Advanced University degree (Masters) is preferable.
·      2 years of relevant experience at the national or international level in public relations, communications or advocacy will be an asset as well as previous experience with a multilateral or international organization.


·      Experience in the usage of computers and office software packages, good knowledge and experience in handling of web-based management systems.
·      Egyptian Nationality
·      At least 22 years of age.
·      Fluency in oral and written English and Arabic is essential
